More History

The amazing thing about history is that there is always more to discover.  You can think you know a lot about something and still be surprised at the various tidbits you never knew before.

This short article blew me away this morning.  The atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki detonated just 1500 feet away from a Catholic church, and killed 8,500 of the church’s 12,000 members (out of 70,000 deaths linked to the bomb) – the largest Christian community in Japan at the time.  Bitter irony that in a country with so little Christian presence, this one large Christian community was Ground Zero.

The cathedral’s web site is here (you can ask Google to translate the page for you).  More information on the church can be found here.
